Ocean Challenge 2026: one month, one shared goal

The Ocean Challenge is the most ambitious marine litter collection campaign ever carried out by Ogyre and its community in a single month.

Overview

June is Ocean Month, and it is often celebrated through images, such as blue horizons, calm surfaces, postcard coastlines. Nevertheless, the reality is less clean: marine pollution is now part of the baseline in many coastal and marine environments, from visible debris trapped in shoreline wrack to fragments that drift, sink, and resurface elsewhere. That persistence is the point: once plastic enters marine environments, it rarely leaves on its own.

Why the Ocean needs a challenge

The Ocean is not just scenery. It functions like an operating system for life on Earth: it exchanges gases with the atmosphere, stores heat, and buffers climate variability.

  • 50% of the oxygen we breathe comes from the Ocean
  • 30% of CO₂ emissions absorbed

At the same time, marine environments are becoming a sink for persistent waste. What seems like a local issue is often the visible outcome of failures upstream, across countries.

  • 85% of marine litter is plastic
  • By 2050, plastic will outweigh fish in the Ocean

The Ocean serves everyone, but it belongs to those who care for it.

One month, one shared goal, one real impact

During the Ocean Month, our choice is to celebrate by acting. Communication can raise attention, but impact requires operations, logistics, and verified end-of-life outcomes.

Since 2024, every June, Ogyre has launched the Ocean Challenge as its largest collective campaign concentrated into a single month carried out by 30+ partners.

The results of previous editions set the rhythm:

  • 2024: more than 14,000 kg of marine waste recovered
  • 2025: the target doubled to 28,000 kg
  • 2026: an even more challenging goal to be achieved

A key element is public tracking. Anyone can follow the Ocean Challenge in real time: kilograms already collected and those still needed to reach the target, followed by the full tracking of each weighing—photos, fisher involved, date and location of the collection, and the story behind the operations.

This year too, companies can join the Challenge by combining real impact with a defined quota of marine and coastal waste that contributes to the collective target, along with co-branded communication and community involvement.
